City of Fort Collins Distributes $25 Trees to Enhance Urban Forest Cover

The City of Fort Collins is set to host its annual Rooted in Community Tree Sale on August 11, offering residents within the Fort Collins Growth Management Area the opportunity to purchase locally grown trees at a heavily subsidized price.

This year's sale aims to help residents increase tree canopy cover, lower energy costs, improve air and water quality, reduce stormwater runoff, and combat climate change by planting more trees locally.

The sale will feature a variety of tree species, including bigtooth maple, catalpa, sucker punch chokecherry, several types of oaks and elms, as well as ornamental and fruit-bearing trees. All trees are grown locally by Fort Collins Wholesale Nursery.

To participate, residents must have a WebTrac account and be ready to purchase trees starting on August 11 at 8 a.m. Each household may reserve up to two trees for $25 each until all 1,000 trees are reserved. Detailed pickup instructions will be sent following the purchase.

The sale is a partnership between the City's Forestry Division and Nature in the City, and more information about the sale can be found on the Forestry Division's website. Residents are encouraged to set up a WebTrac account ahead of time to expedite the process.

Trees must be picked up on September 6 between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. at Hoffman Mill. Benefits of the program include improved air quality and carbon capture, boosted mental and physical health for residents, reduced energy demand and heat mitigation through shade, increased wildlife habitat, and enhanced stormwater filtration.

The Rooted in Community Tree Sale was formerly known as the Community Canopy Program. This initiative is part of the city's efforts to expand Fort Collins' urban canopy and invest in the long-term well-being of the community.

So, mark your calendars for August 11 and visit the official Fort Collins forestry webpage or the WebTrac portal to access the sale link and secure your trees early since the sale remains open only while inventory lasts.
