Cincinnati Bengals Part Ways with Desmond Ridder
The Cincinnati Bengals have released Desmond Ridder, leaving Brandon Allen Browning as Joe Burrow's backup for the upcoming season. This move comes after a season spent with the Arizona Cardinals and Las Vegas Raiders for Ridder, who failed to impress in Week 14 with the Raiders.
Zac Taylor, the head coach of the Bengals, had opted to give Joe Burrow extensive playing time during the preseason to help his offense find a rhythm. However, the team's strategy during the preseason suggested confidence in Browning, as Ridder received limited field time.
Ridder's release marks the end of a turbulent journey for the quarterback, who has now sought a new team in the last four years. His stint with the Bengals began in late July when he signed a deal with the team, but it was short-lived.
The Bengals took a unique approach with their quarterbacks in the offseason, with Browning and Ridder competing for the backup job. However, it seems the team has found their preferred backup in Browning, who is entering his third season with the Bengals, having signed as an undrafted free agent in 2023.
The Bengals had their starters play in the preseason for the first time during Taylor's tenure as a means to address their slow starts, a problem that has plagued the team since their Super Bowl appearance in 2021. Despite this, Ridder's release does not guarantee a swift start to the season for the Bengals.
Ridder's time with the Raiders was brief, as they opted not to re-sign him at the end of the 2024 season. Las Vegas gave him a chance to start in Week 14, but he ended the game with 208 passing yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, which may have contributed to his release.
Ridder's journey in the NFL has been a rollercoaster, with stints at multiple teams. He began the 2024 season on the Arizona Cardinals' practice squad before being poached by the injury-riddled Las Vegas Raiders. Now, he will seek his fifth team in the last four years.
Desmond Ridder received his walking papers from the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday morning, bringing an end to his brief tenure with the team. The Bengals' decision to release Ridder leaves Browning as Burrow's backup for the upcoming season.
