Bremen to participate in the nationwide initiative titled "City Bikes" campaign

Bremen's Bicycle Campaign Shines in 2024

Bremen, a mid-sized German city, has once again showcased its commitment to reducing CO2 emissions and promoting a cycling culture. In 2024, the city participated in the cycling campaign, Stadtradeln, which fitted perfectly into Bremen's tourist theme year 'FAHRRADja! 2024' and its cycling initiative Bike It!

While Bremen may trail behind some cities with similar populations in terms of kilometers cycled, it's essential to consider the context. Cities like Essen, Hannover, and Leipzig have racked up impressive numbers of cycled kilometers, with 910,000, 1,850,000, and 3,384,000 kilometers respectively. However, these cities have been participating in the initiative for several years, giving them a head start.

Comparable data and rankings between Bremen and other mid-sized cities with several years of participation in Stadtradeln were not readily available. Nevertheless, we can draw some comparisons based on related information. For instance, Pforzheim, a city somewhat comparable in size to Bremen, logged 225,191 bicycle kilometers during its latest Stadtradeln campaign, with around 37 tons of CO2 saved by 1,113 participants over three weeks.

Bremen, as a larger city, typically achieves higher absolute values in kilometers cycled and CO2 saved. Previous Stadtradeln campaigns in Bremen have reported multiple hundred thousand kilometers cycled with several tens to hundreds of tons of CO2 emissions avoided. These figures suggest that Bremen’s CO2 savings and ridden kilometers are notably competitive if not higher than those of Pforzheim or cities of similar size.

Looking ahead, the WFB Managing Director, Oliver Rau, has expressed plans for participation in the campaign again in 2025, indicating Bremen's continued dedication to promoting cycling and reducing CO2 emissions.
