Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra marks two centuries of musical excellence in its current season.
In the heart of Bremen, Germany, the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra is gearing up for its 200th anniversary season. This esteemed orchestra, one of the first civilly founded in Germany and Europe, has a rich history of performing contemporary works alongside the great known classics.
The anniversary season promises a diverse programme, featuring milestones in music history from the Vienna Classical period to late romanticism, and compositions from the 20th and 21st centuries. Renowned colleagues like Frank Peter Zimmermann and Ulf Schirmer, as well as outstanding international musicians of the younger generation, will be part of the celebrations.
The composer expecting a world premiere in this special season is David Philip Hefti. Illustrious birthday guests such as Maurice Ravel, Bedřich Smetana, and Charles Ives are also part of the anniversary programme.
Intendant Guido Gärtner explains that the orchestra's long history is a commitment to facing the challenges of the present and future. The anniversary season reflects this commitment, with a programme that is as passionate as it is diverse.
The Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra uses the Halle 1 in the Tabakquartier as an important venue. However, the orchestra's dedication to making classical music accessible to a wide audience extends beyond the concert halls.
The Music Workshop of the Bremen Philharmonic, led by Marko Gartelmann, is a testament to this commitment. With four locations in Bremen, the workshop offers 14 different workshops, 13 school concerts, and five school projects. More than 70 schools in Bremen maintain regular contact with the orchestra's music education team.
The Music Workshop provides a unique opportunity for children and young people to try out classical orchestra instruments, play percussion instruments from around the world, attend interactive school concerts, and even rehearse and perform with orchestra musicians during school project weeks.
In the spirit of inclusivity, the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra will present musical highlights of its anniversary season at the Bremen Glockenspiel on June 22nd, with free admission. Further information and the detailed program of the 2024/2025 season can be found online at this link.
