Art shows in Paris to visit in June
Paris, a city steeped in art history, offers a vibrant and dynamic cultural landscape. Home to major galleries such as the Louvre and the Musee de l'Orangerie, it continues to inspire artists and nurture groundbreaking movements. From impressionism to surrealism, Paris has been an epicenter of radical art movements and remains home to some of the world's most renowned museums and art schools.
June 2025 is no exception, with a wide array of compelling art exhibitions spanning contemporary and historical works.
Steve McQueen's 'Bounty,' on display at the Marian Goodman Gallery until July 25, presents a series of 47 photographs capturing flowers native to Grenada. McQueen, who previously created video installations on the island, offers a stark contrast between idyllic settings and tragic narratives in this exhibition. 'Bounty' invites reflection on history and resilience.
From June 14 to August 2, Gagosian will display works by the late American artist Brice Marden. Known for his minimalist style, Marden's work explores the world of line and color, inspired by his travels and the art of calligraphy.
Hungarian artist Rita Ackermann, whose new series of paintings and related works on paper are on show at Hauser & Wirth from June 11 until October 4, is inspired by French culture, particularly French-Swiss film director and screenwriter Jean-Luc Godard and French theorist Paul Virilio. Ackermann delves into the theme of the double, exploring more than just the presence of duality but its structure.
American artist Matthew Ronay, in his fifth solo exhibition with Perrotin from June 5 until July 26, presents ten sculptures and three wall reliefs, tapping into themes of the subconscious. Through visual tactility and humor, Ronay's work contrasts eerie familiarity with playful color and form.
At the Musee du Louvre-Lens, an exhibition titled 'The Art of Dressing - Dressing like an Artist' runs until July 21, exploring sartorial choices of artists by tracing artistic motives behind personal style reflected in artworks, particularly self-portraits. The aim is to understand what the artist desires to be portrayed as, rather than what they actually wore in reality.
Finally, a major retrospective featuring more than 400 works by David Hockney, spanning six decades, is on display at the Fondation Louis Vuitton until August 31. The exhibit showcases works in various mediums, including oil and acrylic painting, drawings, digital works, and video installations, offering insights into Hockney's distinctive figurative style and exploration of his homosexuality.
These exhibitions promise a wealth of experiences, showcasing the diversity and vibrancy of modern and contemporary art in Paris during June 2025.
