Shining a Light on Old Wonders: Mill Day showcases MillPower in the Rhineland and Westphalia

Highlighting Timeless Skills: Mill Day Exhibits Artisan Workshops - Annual Display of Traditional Artisanship: Mill Day Highlights Skilled Workers in Old Craftsmanship Industries

On Mill Day during Pentecost Monday, the spotlight is turned onto an age-old practice: Water and wind-powered mills in the Rhineland and Westphalia open their doors for visitors to take a peek. The 32nd German Mill Day spotlights a craft that used to be everywhere and has been a vital part of our country's industrial and cultural history.

The action-packed day was started by the German Society for Mills and Mill Preservation to put the spotlight on mills' cultural significance as announced by the Rhineland Regional Council (LVR) in Cologne. "People still remember the mill in their hometown being in operation," said Julia König, who is in charge of Mill Day at the LVR.

Activities, hikes, and bike tours

In the Westphalia-Lippe Regional Council area, for instance, the LWL Open-Air Museums in Hagen and Detmold are participating. Thousands of visitors are expected at various sites in NRW. Depending on what's on offer, visitors can partake in presentations, hikes, or bike tours.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, there were once thousands of mills, processing everything from grain and oil to bones, wood, paper, and rags. Even in the Mill Region of Rhineland between Erft, Wupper, and Sieg, mills, hammer mills, and water power plants will open their doors. One of them is the Grottenhertener Windmill in Bedburg (Rhein-Erft district), which might run its milling mechanisms if wind conditions are right.
