Agapanthus varieties that excel in producing striking, sculptural displays have been extensively cultivated, and here are the top 6 standouts you should consider growing.

The Agapanthus, a popular summer-flowering perennial, is making a splash in gardens across the UK with its striking blooms and versatile growth habits. Here are some of the most favoured varieties to consider for your own garden.

Starting with 'Twister', this compact variety stands at 60cm tall and blooms from June to early September. Known for its compact flowers and long vase life, 'Twister' is a favourite among designers for cut flower displays. When planted en masse, it creates a stunning spectacle.

'Queen Mum', another popular Agapanthus variety, reaches a height of 1.2m and flowers from July to late September. This variety is particularly known for its explosions of enormous firework-like clusters of dual-coloured flowers. However, it's worth noting that 'Queen Mum' is particularly unsettled by frost, so horticultural fleece is advised during the coldest months.

For a lime green and white Agapanthus, look no further than 'Emerald Ice'. This variety looks stunning in white garden schemes and even more captivating when grown in large terracotta pots. 'Emerald Ice' will be on display for most of the summer.

If you're after a dark-stemmed variety, 'Dr Brouwer' is a great choice. Flushing into flower late in the summer, it stands at 80cm tall and blooms from July to September. 'Dr Brouwer' is hardier than other cultivars and perfect for coastal gardens and more exposed plots.

For an Agapanthus with a twist, 'Black Jack' is a must-see. This variety, which was named the RHS Chelsea Flower Show plant of the year 2023, boasts huge one-meter high stems topped with intensely velvety, dark violet inflorescences. 'Black Jack' produces globe-like flowers that are denser and more abundant than usual, blooming non-stop all summer long.

Last but not least, 'Delft Blue' offers spherical clusters of stunning, trumpet-shaped blossoms flushed with pale blue. This variety is extremely free-flowering from June to October and prefers to be covered in winter as it dislikes frost.

These Agapanthus varieties can be purchased from various nurseries and online retailers. 'Twister' can be found at Wilson Bros. Nurseries, 'Queen Mum' at your local garden centre, and 'Dr Brouwer' online from Jacksons Nurseries. 'Delft Blue' can be bought from Easy to Grow Bulbs, and 'Black Jack' from Edenerseeds.

To ensure the best flower displays, an organic, all-purpose plant food is recommended. Happy planting, and enjoy the vibrant colours and sculptural seed heads that these Agapanthus varieties will bring to your garden throughout the summer!
