Acknowledgement of Simplicity in Rural Life
Nestled in the heart of Ohio, the quaint town of Oberlin offers a unique blend of community, convenience, and tranquility that sets it apart from the hustle and bustle of city life.
The compact size of Oberlin promotes a sense of community and convenience, with familiar faces common in the public library and during daily walks around town. The author, who recently spent their summer in San Francisco, misses the quiet morning walks and stargazing sessions in Oberlin, a testament to the town's peaceful and quiet environment, especially during early morning hours.
Walking is the primary mode of transportation in Oberlin, with bikes and cars also present. The town's close-knit community atmosphere is reminiscent of settings in popular TV shows like Gilmore Girls and Schitt's Creek. Parking is not a concern due to the town's compact size, and college students coexist harmoniously with town members, particularly along Main Street.
Oberlin's charm lies in its local businesses, such as Slow Train for coffee, the public library, and Ben Franklin's, which foster personal connections and community support. The Apollo Theater, for instance, offers cheaper ticket prices compared to larger movie theaters, adding to the town's appeal.
The town is not as noisy as a city, allowing for a more serene atmosphere. Interactions with town members are generally friendly, and plenty of people can be seen walking their dogs or lining up for coffee. In just 15 minutes, one can travel from one side of town to the other, making it easy to access work, shops, and leisure activities.
Despite the allure of the city, the author plans to appreciate the city's energy while they are away from Oberlin but intends to return for the next semester. The night sky in Oberlin is characterised by minimal light pollution, allowing for clear star visibility, a sight that the author fondly remembers.
Small towns like Oberlin offer advantages over big cities, such as shorter, more pleasant commutes, lower costs, supportive local businesses, more space, and a slower lifestyle. While big cities offer more job opportunities and amenities, the trade-offs depend on individual priorities. For those seeking a more relaxed pace of life, Oberlin might just be the perfect choice.
