Abingdon in contention for two USA Today accolades
Abingdon, Virginia and Jonesborough, Tennessee are making a strong impression in this year's USA Today Visitors' Choice awards. Both towns have been nominated in multiple categories, showcasing their unique charm and offerings.
Abingdon, nestled in the picturesque mountains of Virginia, is a candidate for the Best Southern Small Town. This nomination is based on its historic Main Street, shopping options, and its stunning location. In addition to this, Abingdon has been nominated in two categories: Favorite Village Food Scene and Fave Southern Village.
In the Favorite Village Food Scene contest, Abingdon is competing against 19 other small-town food scenes from across the U.S., including towns in Maine, Texas, California, Oregon, Minnesota, and more. Abingdon has previously won this title for four consecutive years, from 2019 to 2022.
Some standout restaurants in Abingdon include Foresta, Greeko’s Grill & Cafe, and Summer Roof and Cellar Restaurant. Foresta, rated 4.5/5 on Tripadvisor, is known for its exceptional food and service, offering a variety of small plates. Greeko’s Grill & Cafe serves authentic Mediterranean dishes like lamb gyro, moussaka, and tzatziki, using fresh, high-quality ingredients. Summer Roof and Cellar Restaurant offers American cuisine with a high price point, featuring outdoor seating and a full bar.
Jonesborough, Tennessee is also in the running for Best Southern Village. This small town offers attractions like the Wetlands Theme Park, Tennessee Hills Distillery, and the Jonesborough Repertory Theater.
Individuals can cast their votes once per day for these contests, with the winners set to be revealed on March 3, 2023. Other candidates for Best Southern Small Town include West Monroe in Louisiana, Buena Vista in Virginia, Bryson City in North Carolina, and Anna Maria Island in Florida.
In 2021, WCYB 11 introduced a series called Abingdon Eats to highlight several of the town's standout restaurants, including Foresta, The Girl and the Raven, Peppermill, The Tavern, and 128 Pecan. The Girl & The Raven, while not traditionally a restaurant, is worth mentioning for its cozy atmosphere.
