5 Strategies for Observing National Trails Day
Embrace Your Love for Trails Beyond National Trails Day
Explore ways to cherish trails past the annual National Trails Day event!
National Trails Day® organised by the American Hiking Society each year underscores support for our country's beloved public trails. Marked on the first Saturday in June, this day features various events nationwide to champion advocacy, service, and appreciation for our favorite footpaths.
With multiple ways to partake, you can seamlessly integrate trail excitement into your year. Here's a selection of ways to honor the day:
Sign up for AMC's TrailsFest Events
alignment with National Trails Day, AMC hosts its annual TrailsFest June 1-2 each year. Leaders across the region curate events designated as part of TrailsFest. Locate an event nearby, such as MA TrailsFest at Wachusett Mountain, or browse AMC's list of activities for further options. If you can't attend an AMC event, seek out alternative "honorary" days for an outdoor adventure or arrange one with friends and family.
Pledge the Leave No Trace Pact
Weekends away might not align with the event date, but the Leave No Trace philosophy can be adopted for future outdoor adventures. Adhere to the 'pack in, pack out' motto and preserve the landscape in its most natural state by refraining from moving, removing, or damaging native rocks, plants, trees, and other items.
Volunteering for trail restoration can make a meaningful difference.
Get Involved in Trail Conservation Programs
Engage in programs that cultivate an understanding of the environment and trail networks. Register for a trail crew or discover varied volunteer opportunities. Appreciation for trails is a year-round pursuit - not just on one particular day!
Trail Cleanups
Take action in your neighborhood or park by collecting litter. Not only will you be taking care of your surroundings, but you'll also contribute to the wellbeing of your neighbors and the environment.
Support Trail Fundraisers
Express your solidarity with a donation to a trail fund, championing trail protection and outdoor spaces. Every contribution counts towards safeguarding our trails. Even a simple donation or gift membership will make a difference. Support AMC or choose your preferred fund.
Beyond the confines of National Trails Day, there are countless methods to engage with trails year-round. Organize local events, promote trail use for health and wellness, support trail development, engage underrepresented communities, and foster trail stewardship. By embracing these activities, we preserve a lasting appreciation for the vital role trails play in our lives, communities, and environmental preservation.
Incorporate environmental science by adopting the Leave No Trace Pact during outdoor adventures, preserving landscapes and maintaining natural states of trails. Additionally, contribute to home and garden by organizing local trail cleanups, ensuring outdoor living spaces are clean and sustainable.
